November is the kick off month for Winter Sports! No more Friday night lights or vigorous cross country meets. Now, it’s time for Basketball, Swimming, Wrestling, and Indoor Track!

Basketball tryouts started October 31st for any girls or boys wanting to make the team.  Basketball workouts have been held by coaches after school throughout the school weeks for anyone who planned to tryout. The boys basketball team’s first scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday, November 12th at West Johnston High School and is an all-day tournament.  The girls’ first scrimmage is Wednesday, November 6th against New Bern High

Varsity Boys basketball player Aaron Williams says, “I think our team’s looking pretty solid this year. We have four returning players and a few players coming up from JV. We went to a few tournaments in the summer and did pretty well so we’ll see how it all comes together.”

The swim team dove into their season with many new faces. They will have their first meet on November 30th against the Havelock Rams at the TRYMCA in New Bern, NC. Junior swimmer Hanitua Teai says, “Our first meet isn’t until November 30, so I think that should go well. It’s only the first week and the team is looking awesome!
Everyone is getting the hang of every stroke quickly and were looking really good. It feels like we’ve been swimming for months! Even though this swim season is going to be a little more difficult, we have three great coaches and the whole team are all great swimmers! I’m hoping that even though we have fewer meets, most of us will still get
state times so more of us get the experience of states.”

Our back-to-back state champion wrestling team members are pumped to start another successful season this winter. The first wrestling match is home November 22nd against rival school West Carteret. Four-year wrestler and Senior Garrett Bridges says, “We’re going to work as hard as we have the last couple years, if not harder. We’re going to challenge ourselves with difficult tournaments. Hopefully, those correlate to another state championship for the team and individuals.”

Cold weather doesn’t stop everyone from running in the winter! Even with few participants, indoor track manages to be a strong team. Indoor track hasn’t quite started yet, but when it does, they will be sure to be ready. Senior runner Hope White says, “We have a lot of new potential, despite the size of the team, and we are ready to get this season underway.”

A list of all winter sports schedules can be found on Croatan’s website under “Athletics.” We should have a successful season this year for all of our sports. Come out and support all of your Cougar Athletes!
