Anna Mixon Drops Dimes

You could call Anna Mixon the Rajon Rondo of Croatan High School. While she doesn’t lead her team in scoring, without her they wouldn’t put up nearly as many points.

The senior point guard and team captain led the Girl’s Varsity Basketball Team in assists last season. She dished out 2.3 assists per game, with a total of 51 assists on the year. Even though she isn’t a post player, she was also one of the top rebounders on the team, averaging 3.1 per game.

Any fan that has seen Anna play can say that she is one of the most unselfish players that they have had the privilege of watching. She will make the extra pass for the open shot, even when she could have scored. Just by watching her on-court demeanor, you can tell that Anna puts the good of the team above herself.

But the senior guard can score as well. She uses her speed for fast-break points, while she is also a skilled three-point marksman. Anna is able to use her small stature and petite size to dribble around defenders and slash to the basket. This is when Anna usually finds the open woman. She is also an exceptional scorer close to the basket. She can finish with contact and is skilled in using her minimal height and size when finishing in the paint.

Anna’s defensive prowess is also exceptional. She puts up a tenacious and aggressive defense, dogging opposing point guards that try to slip past her.

This year, Head Girl’s Varsity Basketball Coach Andrew Gurley, hopes that Anna will continue to help the team. “She is one of our senior captains and is a tremendous leader on and off the court.  Her ability to direct our team at the point guard position will give us several opportunities to win games this year,” said the coach. While the varsity girl’s season has started off to a rough 0-2 start, there are still a lot of games to be played. Mixon will be an asset to the team in their effort to get wins.

One thing that makes Anna special is her work ethic. She works hard in and out of practice to become a better player.  “Anna has vastly improved from year to year and I believe her work ethic will payoff this year with the success she will have,” said Coach Gurley.

Mixon not only excels on the basketball court, but on the soccer field and on the track as well. “She excels academically as well as athletically and is a great role model for all the athletes at Croatan,” said Coach Gurley. Anna Mixon definitely assists her fellow Cougars, on and off the court.
