Think Twice

Posted on December 11, 2011

Parties filled with people acting crazy, music playing as loud as it can go, and alcoholic drinks in everyone’s hand. The night turns into morning before anyone knows it. Two choices play into your head: either drive while intoxicated or get someone who hasn’t had a drink to drive you. The worst choice is too often picked.

A "Booze it and Loose it" checkpoint.

In 2010, more than a thousand alcohol related accidents occurred.  They ended in thirty-one fatalities and over seven hundred injuries.  How do we try to stop these incidents that seem to keep occurring? Simple:  we do it with the Booze it and Lose it campaign.

Over three thousand “Booze it and Lose it” check points were conducted in 2010. These checkpoints for 2011 will begin on December 2nd and end on January 2nd. This time last year 3,800 drivers were charged with driving while impaired.

The police may be looking for drunk drivers or other things that seem suspicious. Officers also issued 1, 131 safety belt and 204 child passenger safety violations, 5,757 speeding violations, and 661 drug charges. While doing these check points they have also found 308 fugitives and 29 stolen cars.

Taylor Jackson, a West Craven graduate said, “My first time going through the booze it and lose it checkpoint was scary. All you see is a line of cars going into bright lights with a big bus on the side of the road. Luckily the cop that I met was nice and just asked me if I was going home.”

Think twice about taking a sip out of that red cup. Do you really want to end up in jail or maybe even on your death bed?
