Posted on January 6, 2012

This list counts down to the number one athlete of 2011. Each star is broken down by stats and by performance to see who truly is: the best athlete in the world.

Sharpova returns an opponents slam.

10. Maria Sharapova

Maria Sharapova slowly climbed her way in to the top ten in the world tennis rankings during 2011. She started the season outside of the top ten and finished ranked as the number two player in the world. She defeated the number one ranked player this year, Carolina Wozniacki, and could have taken the number one world ranking later in the season, but was forced to withdraw from the tournament in which she could have overtaken the world’s top player. Sharapova’s skill and rapid climb to the number two world ranking earned her a spot as one of 2011’s best athletes.

BaylorUniversity’s Robert Griffin III or RG3 as he’s better known, falls at number seven on the list. He brought home Baylor’s first Heisman Trophy this year, while sporting his Superman socks. The Baylor QB threw for almost 3,998 yards and thirty-six touchdowns, while rushing for 644 yards and nine touchdowns. RG3 soared his way into the list, just as superman would soar.

Pujols slugs away at another pitch,

6. Albert Pujols

Albert Pujols slugged his way into number 5 in the countdown. He hit thirty-seven homeruns last season, and tallied ninety-nine runs batted in. Although some are upset about his recent move to the Anaheim Angels, there is no question that Albert Pujols is one of the top athletes of 2011.

Fredette preparing to score another 2 points.

5. Jimmer Fredette

Jimmer Fredette proved to everybody that you don’t have to go to a big time school to make it “big time.” The senior was a first team All-American and named the national player of the year, after averaging 28.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. He was drafted into the NBA by the Charlotte Bobcats but his rights were traded to the Sacramento Kings, which is where he will be playing this season. Jimmer awed us in 2011, and there’s no telling what 2012 holds for the caffeine free superstar.

Rodgers, Green Bay Packers

2. Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rogers showed us in 2011 that he is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. He came from the quarterback that led an underdog team to a Super bowl ring, to possibly the best quarterbacks in the league. He has thrown for 4,125 yards in the 2011 season so far, throwing thirty-six touchdown passes. He has also rushed for 207 yards and two touchdowns. The Packer’s quarterback has dominated 2011 so far, and he doesn’t show any signs of slowing.

Tebow, part of the Denver Broncos

1. Tim Tebow

And the number one on the countdown is… Tim Tebow. Yes, that’s right, the unorthodox, underdog, long-shot quarterback beat out everybody on the countdown. Tebow has turned the Denver Broncos into a formidable force in the NFL. Everybody doubted Tebow when he entered the league 2 years ago, but he has proven them wrong ten times over. The quarterback has started 7 games this season, and has won 6 of them. He has thrown for 1, 054 yards and ten touchdowns, and rushed for 468 yards and three touchdowns. Tim Tebow has shown that stats don’t always make a player, but heart and results do. That is why he comes in at number one on the list.
